Math Team

The math team classes for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Simmons are both an advanced academic class as well as a competitive team.  We attend 10 – 12 tournaments from October through April, host a tournament, and compete in 4 in-class contests.  This past year we have again won the Gold Level School award given by MathCounts, won awards from the Rocket City Math League international competition, and took the American Mathematics Competition tests at level 8 and level 10.

As fundraisers and service projects, the math teams sell the supply kits at registration and operate the Buc Stop, the school supply store located outside the cafeteria on the same hallway as the computer lab.

Students who want to join the math teams rank in the top 2% – 3% of the population as measured by standardized tests, have a teacher recommendation, and take a placement test in the spring.  They have summer homework and are required to participate in the tournaments.
