The National Junior Honor Society, NJHS, is an honor bestowed upon 8th grade students who exhibit outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship, and character.  These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.

Students with a yearly cumulative average of 92% or higher in the content areas of math, science, social studies, and language arts for the first semester of 8th grade are eligible for consideration. Quality points are not given for advanced math or math team students.

The quality of service is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community and done without compensation.  Student leaders, or those with leadership potential, are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.  Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.  The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations. and school clubs.  The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

The selection process in the fall will require the completion of an application which has to be submitted to the advisors, Mrs. Morgan, by the students who are identified by their academic performance as being eligible, or “candidates” for membership.  Candidates will receive a candidate letter and an application to be submitted for consideration in January.  The application has to be turn in with membership fee for licensing, to the advisors by the allotted time. After the induction ceremony, the student will submitted at least 10 hours of additional community service before the due date as well as keep their grades up, to remain a member in good standing. If the student has already obtained 10 hours of community service they may turn in the yellow community service card with application and membership fee.
