👣 Students, Own Your Digital Footprint 👣

Every post, comment, and like leaves a digital footprint. Make sure the trail you leave behind is one you're proud of.
Positive Posting Habits:
  • Nothing Disappears: Screenshots exist! 📸 Even "temporary" posts or snaps can be saved and shared.
  • Pause Before Posting: Ask yourself: Is this kind? Would I say this face-to-face? 🤔
  • Lock Down Personal Info: Keep your full name, location, school, and passwords private. 🔒

🏠 Household Device Boundaries 🏠

Digital Citizenship Week (Oct 19-23) is a great time to reset screen time habits and help middle schoolers navigate their online world responsibly.
Common Sense Media Tips:
  • Overnight Device Curfews: Have students charge phones and laptops in a central family area at night to protect their sleep. 💤
  • Screen-Free Family Zones: Keep places like the dinner table phone-free to encourage face-to-face conversation. 🍽️
  • Family Media Agreement: Work together using Common Sense Media's Family Media Agreement (PDF) to set clear expectations around apps, group chats, and screen limits. 📋
  • Model Mindful Sharing: Show your child how to respect online privacy by asking before you share photos or updates about them online. 🤝

⚖️ Finding Your Media Balance & Digital Well-Being📱✨

As we settle into the school year, our technology focus this month is Media Balance—learning how to make healthy, intentional choices about when, why, and how we use technology in our daily lives. Finding the right balance between screen time, schoolwork, physical activity, and family time helps us stay energized, focused, and happy!

What is Common Sense Media?
Hoover City Schools is proud to be a recognized Common Sense Media District! Common Sense Media is a leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids, parents, and educators navigate the digital world safely. They offer trusted, independent reviews, age-based ratings, and educational resources on digital citizenship, apps, movies, and games so families can make informed technology decisions together.

💡Media Balance Tips for the Family:
  • 🍽️ Establish Screen-Free Zones: Pick specific times and areas (like mealtimes or bedrooms overnight) to unplug and recharge.
  • 💭 Reflect on Screen Habits: Notice how different online activities make you feel—are you feeling connected and creative, or drained and distracted?
  • 🚴 Prioritize Green Time: Pair digital entertainment with physical activity, outdoor time, hobbies, and face-to-face time with family and friends.

🛡️💻 Smart & Safe: HCS Chromebook Guidelines 🔒✨

Using your Hoover City Schools Chromebook responsibly is the key to a great school year! 🚀 By receiving an HCS device, students and families agree to the HCS Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)—using digital tools in a safe, ethical, and respectful way.

Key Reminders for Students & Families:
  • 🔍 No Expectation of Privacy: Chromebooks and HCS Google accounts are district property, and all digital activity can be reviewed.
  • 🏠 Rules Apply Everywhere: Web filters and acceptable use policies remain active whether you are at school, at home, or on another network.
  • ⚠️ Keep It Responsible: Improper use can lead to restricted access, suspended privileges, or device revocation.
